Ava DuVernay, born August 24, 1972 in Long Beach California. DuVernay was introduced to the arts from the aunt Denise. The aunt worked as a nurse who stayed overnight in order to provide her with the chance to learn about art literature or theater. DuVernay fell in love with the 1961 movie West Side Story after her aunt introduced the film to DuVernay. DuVernay discovered through experience that art can be a powerful tool for activism. DuVernay learned to be socially aware from her mother. While DuVernay was raised living in Compton with her family she lived in Lowndes County Alabama where her father's family lived for generations. The time she spent in Selma Alabama inspired her later to write a script for a film based on the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and his Civil Rights Movement. DuVernay was a graduate of Saint Joseph High School Lakewood California, in 1990. She went to the University of California Los Angeles to earn degrees in English in addition to African American Studies. DuVernay began producing for the broadcast industry while she was still at the college. Her career began working as an assistant at CBS News in the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalled being instructed to take a look at the junk of the home of a juror. Following her disappointment with journalism by the tasks she was handed and deciding to go after the field of publicity. DuVernay began working in a small studio as a Junior Publicist shortly after graduating from college. The DuVernay Agency is her first agency for public relations.
